How I’ll test tools, and why there are no reviews yet

There’s a page missing from this site: the reviews. That’s deliberate. I’ve been using most of these tools for days, not months, and a review written this early is a tour, not a verdict.

The four rules

  1. Ninety days of real use before I call it a review. Before that, a tool gets mentioned in a build log and nothing more.
  2. I pay, or it’s free. No free accounts in exchange for coverage. Where I paid, the number from my invoice goes in the post.
  3. Every price has a date on it. Read from the company’s own page, on a day I write down, and re-checked before I reuse it.
  4. If I haven’t checked something, I say so instead of guessing. An unverified figure appears like this — not verified yet — on purpose, so you can see the gap.
Why rule four exists
While drafting this site, a price I hadn’t checked made it into three versions of the homepage. It looked completely reasonable, which is exactly why nobody questioned it for a while — and it was wrong. Nothing was published. The rule is here so it can’t happen again.

Pick any number on this site and ask where it came from. If I can’t tell you the source and the date, it comes down. Tell me if you find one.
